Mobile government goes to next level with announcement of Mobile Application Contest by Indian Prime Minister's MyGov initiative

March 03, 2015, India. We had predicted this in all the editorials since 2006 have that mobiles will become the de facto devices for delivery of public services. The recent initiative by Indian Prime Minsiter Mr. Narendra Modi's MyGov platform is now ready to engage citizens for co-creation of new citizen engagement mobile applications.

MyGov , the citizen engagement platform of Indian Prime Minister's office has launched a nationwide contest to build a mobile app for the Prime Minister's Office. All the citizens in addition to different colleges and other institutions will be able to participate in the contest. The initiative is supported by Google, one of the biggest Internet based companies globally!

Various stages of contest will include receipt of ideas by PMO, shortlisting of the best ideas and then deployment of these ideas as mobile applications.

Editor's Viewpoint : The initiative is excellent for engaging citizens in co-creation of innovative applications for the PMO and government of India. Such initiatives have been able to unlock great value globally. However, the policy for protecting  the Intellectual Property rights of the presenters of ideas should be very clearly announced. The rights of the contestants who don't make up to the shortlist also need to be protected especially in light of make in India program of GoI. It has been observed during similar contsts in past where MNCs are involved that most of the ideas end up being taken away by the commerical entities involved without paying any cost/royalties to the originators of the idea  and are converted to applications/products/patents in countries other than India. A very strong IP protection policy of Indian citizens is highly recommended.
